The 1877-CC is a scarcer Type Three issue which becomes quite hard to find (and expensive to boot) in the higher AU grades. An AU55 is currently valued at nearly double the price of an AU50.
This piece has the body and luster of an AU55 but it has been conservatively graded by PCGS. This is likely the result of some light hairlines on the obverse and if the coin were a bit more deeply toned, these would not be readily visible.
No PCGS AU50 example of the 1877-CC double eagle has sold at auction since January 2011 when a non-CAC coin brought $3,738.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 21 finer.
