Old “Fatty” holder.
The 1877-CC is numismatically significant as the first Type Three double eagle produced at the Carson City mint. It is a scarcer date and one which becomes very scarce in the higher AU grades and quite rare in Uncirculated.
This piece has been of the market for many years and it is housed in an older holder. The obverse is extremely choice and grades close to–if not–AU58 on its own with a majority of the original luster, nice orange-gold color and just some minor scuffing in the fields. The reverse is very lightly worn with good luster and color and it shows a number of mint-made copper spots including one at the M in AMERICA and a number located on and about the shield.
The last NGC AU55 example to sell at auction was Heritage 11/12: 5184 which brought $7,638. in Heritage’s October 2012 auction, a PCGS/CAC AU55 realized $8,238.
This date is expensive in AU58 and nearly impossible to find in MS60 and above. For most collectors, a choice AU55 such as this piece will be the perfect 1877-CC double eagle for their set.
