The 1876-S is the final year of issue for the popular Type Two Liberty Head double eagle type which was initiated in 1866. The 1876-S is very common in circulated grades and only moderately scarce in MS60 to MS61. It becomes scarce in properly graded MS62 and it is rare in MS63. In MS64 and higher, this date is extremely rare and very expensive. For most type collectors, a nice MS62 is ideal.
This lightly scuffed piece is original and it displays lovely subtle rose-gold, orange and rose color. The obverse shows some marks in the fields while the reverse is very clean and choice. For the grade, this is a very choice and attractive 1876-S double eagle and it compares favorable to MS63 Type Two double eagles I have seen at double the price.
The last PCGS MS62 1876-S double eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction was Heritage 11/13: 4745 which sold for $4,406 and was not as choice as the current example. Another PCGS MS62 with CAC approval, ex Heritage 1/13: 7515 brought $4,994.
CAC has approved 35 in this grade with 19 finer.
