CHOICE UNCIRCULATED 1876-S DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1876-S is the most common Type Two double eagle from the San Francisco mint. It is numismatically interesting as the last Type Two from this facility and it becomes a scarce issue in MS63 and a rare one finer.
I hand-selected this coin from a small hoard of fresh-to-the-market pieces and liked it better than coins graded MS63 from this source. It is choice and very frosty with nice rose and natural orange-gold color. The strike is exceptional and this coin would easily grade a full MS63 were it not for some small scuffs in the left obverse field.
Five different MS62+ examples of the 1876-S $20 sold at auction between April 2011 and April 2016, bringing results ranging from a low Of $3,760 to a high of $4,200.
CAC has approved 59 in MS62 and MS62+ combined with 21 finer.
