The 1876 is one of the more common Type Two double eagles. This type was made from 1866 to 1876. It is generally a hard type to locate in the higher Uncirculated grades. As a rule, the more common Type Two double eagles are affordable and available up through MS62, very scarce in MS63, very rare in MS64 and almost never seen in Gem.
This 1876 double eagle is frosty and very choice for the grade with nice surfaces and color. There are just a few too many marks in the left obverse field to grade this coin MS62 but it is clealry superior to most Type Two double eagles graded MS61.
CAC has approved 15 in this grade with 16 finer.
