The 1876-CC is one of the two most common Type Two double eagles from Carson City along with the 1875-CC. It has become hard to locate in properly graded AU58, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is one of the single nicest AU58 Carson City double eagles of any date which I have owned in some time. It exhibits superb rose and orange-gold colors with rich mint bloom adding warmth to the hues. There is just the slightest amount of rub on the high spots and a few marks can be seen on the obverse but I would match the appearance of this coin with nearly any 1876-CC double eagle graded MS60 or even MS61.
The last AU58 1876-CC with CAC approval to sell at auction (an NGC coin) brought $10,575 as Heritage 1/14: 7143. The present example is nicer, in my opinion.
A wonderful Type Two CC type coin for the quality-conscious collector.
CAC has approved 23 in this grade with 22 finer.
