NGC/CAC AU58 1876-CC DOUBLE EAGLE: A PERFECT TYPE TWO TYPE COIN
The 1876-CC is one of the two most available Type Two Carson City double eagles in higher grades along with the 1875-CC. As a date, the 1876-CC is easy to locate inn grades up to AU55 but properly graded AU58′s are not easy to find, especially with choice surfaces and natural coloration.
This very choice slider likely saw little–if any–circulation but it has enough friction in the obverse fields to merit its AU58 grade. Both sides exhibit rich natural orange-gold and rose color and the luster is frosty and abundant. There are no deep, detracting marks and the reverse, on its own, grades in the M61 to MS62 range.
The most recent APR for a non-CAC NGC AU58 1876-CC double eagle is $8,225 for a nice example offered as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14372. The mot recent record for an NGC AU58 with CAC approval is $8,225 for Newman V: 3385, sold by Heritage in November 2014.
A CAC approved MS61 1876-CC double eagle if available would cost in the $16,000-18,000 range and I don’t think you would see all that much difference between said coin and this nice slider.
CAC has approved 35 in this grade with 28 finer.
