This issue is numismatically significant as the final Type Two double eagle from this mint. The 1876-CC is a common date in circulated grades but nice AU55 to AU58 pieces are becoming hard to locate and are in strong demand.
This very pleasing example was recently sourced from Europe and it has a clear “Euro” appearance with attractive deep natural green-gold color contrasted by dark highlights. A good deal of luster can be seen below the toning and the surfaces are extremely clean. The first four stars on the obverse are flat, as struck.
The last NGC AU55 1876-CC double eagle to sell at auction brought $3,819 as Heritage 11/12: 24784 and it didn’t have CAC approval; a PCGS AU55, also without CAC approval sold for $4,259 in an October 2012 Heritage auction.
If you are looking for an ideal Type Two CC double eagle, this is certainly worth your consideration.
