POPULAR 1875-CC DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1875-CC is the most available Type Two double eagle. This fact makes it very popular as a type coin. It is not hard to locate in the middle AU grades but it is not often seen with natural color and choice surfaces.
This frosty orange-gold example has enough remaining luster to grade AU55 but it has some weakness of strike at the centers and a few stray marks on the obverse which makes it properly graded as an AU53. The eye appeal is clearly above-average for the grade.
The only PCGS AU53 to sell at auction since 2013 brought $5,265 as Bonham’s 6/14: 1294.
A presentable and affordable Type Two CC double eagle.
CAC has approved 12 in this grade with 77 finer.
