GEM SLIDER 1875-CC DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1875-CC is the most available Type Two Carson City double eagle. It is not really scarce in AU58 but only a small percentage of the coins so graded by NGC and PCGS are choice and original. A nice original example with pleasing color and clean fields is perfect for a type collector and this adds to the demand for such coins.
This coin is the epitome of a Gem slider and it has the appearance of an MS62. It is free of apparent wear and the satiny luster is undisturbed. The strike is a bit soft at the centers and this gives the mistaken appearance of wear. The color is a pleasing natural rose and light orange hue and the surfaces are nearly free of abrasions. There is a small mint-made grease stain from the inside of the bun down into the right field on the obverse and both sides show a few non-detracting copper spots.
The last CAC approved 1875-CC double eagle to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which brought $8,225 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 4157. The same price was achieved by a non-CAC NGC AU58+ which was just sold at Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14369.
Unless you are willing to spend $11,000-13,000 on an MS61, this attractive NGC/CAC AU58 is your best bet for a date set or for a type collection.
CAC has approved 25 in this grade with 40 finer.
