The rarity of this date is much different than other issues such as the 1875-CC and 1876-CC. Unlike those two issues, the 1874-CC is almost impossible to find in Uncirculated and it is very scarce in the higher AU grades.
This is one of the nicer AU55 examples of this date which I have seen with rich orange-gold fields highlighted by darker hues on the relief. There is a considerable amount of underlying mint luster on both sides and the surfaces are much cleaner than normal. As is common with this issue, there is some minor weakness of strike at the central reverse.
This date is generally available at a rate of once (or perhaps twice) per year at auction and almost never with original color and surfaces. An important piece for the date collector of CC double eagles.
CAC has approved 10 in this grade with six finer.
