The 1874-CC is one of seven Type Two double eagles from the Carson City mint. It is far scarcer than the 1875-CC and 1876-CC. It is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range and it becomes very scarce in the higher AU grades and rare in Uncirculated.
This mid-range AU example has soft, frosty luster below medium orange-gold and greenish hues. There are a few marks on the neck and cheek of Liberty which knock this from an AU55 grade.
There have been no PCGS AU53 1874-CC double eagles sold at auction since March 2011. The last NGC AU53, ex Heritage 11/12: 5169, went for $4,429.
An affordable but above-average example of this tougher Type Two CC double eagle.
