The 1873-CC is tied with the 1872-CC as the third rarest Type Two Carson City double eagle after the 1870-CC and the 1871-CC. It is similar in overall rarity to the 1878-CC and 1879-CC although it is more available in higher grades than these two dates. The 1873-CC is very scarce in AU55 to AU58 and rare in Uncirculated.
This very lustrous example has the naked-eye appearance of an AU58 but there is just a bit too much chatter on the surfaces to grade it as such. It shows light yellow-gold and there is not much in the way of actual wear on either the obverse or the reverse. The strike is acceptable and for the date, the eye appeal is above-average.
The last AU55 to sell at auction was a non-CAC NGC graded example which brought $19,975 as Heritage 1/14: 7125.
Only three AU55 1873-CC double eagles have sold at auction since the end of 2011 and this is a date whose demand continues to far outstrip the supply.
