While not as scarce as issues such as the 1871-CC and 1872-CC, the 1873-CC is an early date CC double eagle which is quite hard to find in the higher circulated grades and very rare in Uncirculated. In AU58, it is extremely hard to find, especially with original color and surfaces.

This is one of the nicer “slider” examples of this date that I have seen or owned in many years. It is everything that you’d want in a coin graded AU58: very lustrous, very lightly worn and very nicely toned in deep, natural orange-gold and pale green hues. There are a few old scrapes on the obverse including one just to the let of the date; the reverse is clean and choice. For the date, the eye appeal is really exceptional as this issue is typically seen with dull, baggy surfaces.

The last AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC NGC coin which brought $23,500 as Heritage 10/12: 6219; in my opinion, it was nowhere near as nice as the present example. In the January 2013 Stacks Bowers auction, a PCGS MS61 example of the 1873-CC $20 brought $55,813.

This is likely the nicest 1873-CC double eagles that will be available to collectors for some time. An important CC double eagle.

CAC has approved five in this grade with none finer.
