For many collectors, the 1872-CC is the earliest date CC double eagle that they will add to their set. It is more obtainable than the 1870-CC and 1871-CC but it is not by any stretch of the imagination common, even in lower grades.
This nice medium green-gold example is characterized reddish-gold color at many of the obverse stars and around the reverse lettering. The surfaces lack the pronounced abrasions seen on most early CC double eagles and the overall eye appeal is excellent.
Typical quality non-CAC examples of this date in this grade have sold in the $5,500-6,000 range in recent months. I can find no records for a CAC approved example in this grade having sold at auction.
An affordable yet choice and desirable early CC double eagle.
