The scarcest Philadelphia Type Two double eagles are the 1868 and the 1871. Most collectors are aware of the desirability of the former; the latter remains undervalued and not as well-known.
This light orange-gold example shows even wear with some luster in the protected areas. The obverse is reasonably mark-free; there are a few small nicks on the reverse including a few scrapes below the N in UNITED.
There have been no PCGS EF45 1871 double eagles sold at auction since March 2004; the last NGC EF45 brought $2,128 in Heritage’s 7/11 auction.
For less than $2,500 it would be hard to find a scarcer Type Two double eagle of any date/mint.
