The 1871 is the last of four undervalued, scarce Type Two double eagles from the Philadelphia mint. It is a bit scarcer than the 1870 and noticeably rarer than the 1869; the 1868 is the scarcest of this quartet.
This is a bright, frosty example with pale yellow-gold color. It is a bit on the “marky” side on the obverse while the reverse is cleaner and choicer.
No 1871 double eagles have sold at auction since the end of 2012 when a PCGS AU55 went a bit cheaply at $4,600 in a Stack’s Bowers sale while Heritage sold an NGC AU55 for $4,700.
