The 1870-S is similar in rarity to the 1868-S and 1869-S. All of these issues are very common in AU grades up to AU55 but properly graded AU58′s are scarce and this date (along with its two counterparts) is truly rare in Uncirculated.
This choice slider shows very light friction in the obverse fields while the reverse grades at least MS61 to MS62 on its own. The light yellow-gold and rose surfaces are lightly abraded and the eye appeal is excellent.
No CAC approved AU58 example of this date have sold at auction. The two most recent records for non-CAC NGC 58′s are both $4,406.
CAC has approved six in this grade with just two finer.
