SCARCE MS62 1867 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1867 is more available than the 1868-1871 Philadelphia double eagle run but it is seen less often than the 1872-1876 dates. The 1867 is scarce in Uncirculated and it becomes very scarce in properly graded MS62 and quite rare finer. The clear finest known was sold for $258,500 (!) as Newman V: 3337 in November 2014; it graded MS66 and was approved by CAC.
This frosty example has never been dipped or brightened and it shows attractive mellow rose and pale green-gold hues as is “right” for the issue. A few scuffs in the fields limit the grade but these are shallow and much less conspicuous than on other similarly graded 1867 double eagles which I have seen; including a few which were CAC approved.
The last two PCGS MS62 1867 double eagles to sell at auction brought $12,352 as Stacks Bowers 8/14: 12035 (for a non-CAC piece) and $15,275 as Heritage 1/14: 7100 (for a CAC approved piece).
If available, a PCGS MS63 would cost over $30,000 and it likely would not be appreciably finer than the present example. A great coin for the advanced Type Two double eagle date collector.
