The 1864-S is among the more available Civil War double eagles from this mint but properly graded AU55 examples with good eye appeal are scarce. And with a big price jump from AU55 to AU58, the former grade might be considered to be especially good value by a savvy collector.
This orange-gold and rose example shows a good deal of luster and appears far less “marky” than what is normal for this date. There are a few scuffs in the left obverse field while the reverse is very choice.
There are no records for a CAC-approved AU55 1864-S double eagle. A nice quality NGC AU55 without a CAC sticker brought $3,525 as Heritage 3/13: 28571.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 16 finer.
