RARE AND POPULAR UNCIRCULATED CIVIL WAR 1863 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1863 is the second rarest Civil War date from the Philadelphia after the 1862 and it is the third rarest Philadelphia Type One issue after the 1859 and the 1862. It is seen most often in EF40 to AU53 and it is a rare, strongly in-demand issue in Uncirculated with between two and three dozen known; mostly in MS60 to MS61.

This piece has a very fresh appearance with deep orange-gold color accentuated with darker hues from likely storage in a European bank. It is a strictly “new” coin with no visible wear but there are some scuffs in the obverse fields which limit the grade. Most importantly, this piece has likely never been cleaned or brightened as have most 1863 double eagles.

Two PCGS MS61′s (and no NGC MS61′s) have sold at auction since 2009 and they brought $28,700 in 2012 and $31,625 in 2011.

This date remains in strong demand by multiple levels of collectors including Type One double eagle specialists and Civil War gold aficionados.
