RARE AND POPULAR CHOICE AU 1863 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1863 is the second rarest Civil War double eagle from the Philadelphia mint after the 1862. It is seen most often in the EF and lower AU grades and it is scarce in properly graded AU58. In Uncirculated, this date is rare and expensive and for many advanced collectors, AU55 to AU58 range is the target range.
This very lustrous example probably never entered circulation but it has enough bagmarks and rub on the high spots to rightfully grade it “just” AU58. The obverse shows a splash of orange-gold color in the left field and at the center; the reverse is choicer and grades MS61 or so on its own
The last two PCGS AU58 examples of this date to sell at auction brought $25,850 (for a CAC approved piece) as Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 10270 and $20,563 (for a non-CAC piece) offered as Heritage 2015 FUN: 4374.
The 1863 is the third rarest Philadelphia Type One double eagle and it has multiple levels of demand due to its Civil War issuance.
