DESIRABLE PCGS/CAC AU58 1862-S DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1862-S has a similar rarity profile to the 1861-S. Both dates are common in grades up to AU55 but are scarce in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated with most of the Mint State pieces known clustered in the 60 to 61 range.

This example is from the same old collection as the 1861-S and 1863-S double eagles in this group of coins and it is clearly not from a shipwreck. It is one of the choicest “slider” 1862-S double eagles I have seen or sold and it shows just the barest amount of friction o the high spots. The surfaces are less scuffed than usual for the date and are overlaid with nice Mint frost below natural russet hues on both sides. The eye appeal is far above average.

The last CAC approved AU58 1862-S to sell at auction realized $7,638 as Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 1352.

If available, a PCGS MS61 with CAC approval would sell for at least twice the asking price of this CAC approved AU58 and I doubt whether you would see that much difference in cosmetic appeal.

CAC has approved 25 in this grade with only seven finer.
