This beautifully toned slider has deep, even orange and green-gold color. While likely sourced from Europe, this piece doesn’t have a typical “Euro” appearance with dark, “smudgy” color on the devices. There is little–if any– wear and the surfaces are clean with just a few small marks noted. A slight scrape near the inside of star one on the obverse serves as identification.
The 1862-S is among the scarcer Civil War era double eagles from the San Francisco mint. It is seen most often in the EF45 to AU53 grades and is characterized by unappealing, heavily abraded surfaces. It is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated. Trends jumps to $16,500 in MS60, making a choice AU58 like this an excellent value.
In the recent Heritage October 2012 auction, a non-CAC PCGS AU58 example brought $7,638. This piece is far choicer and is worth a significant premium due to its eye appeal.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with just two finer.
