For many years, the 1861 was regarded as “dirt common” in nearly all grades but current population data shows that it is not often available in Uncirculated. When seen, the typical piece is in the MS60 to MS61 range and is characterized by dense abrasions on the surfaces.
This fresh, lustrous piece has very pleasing rose and orange-gold color. The obverse fields have some scuffs from light handling but there is no actual wear; the reverse is choice save for two stray bagmarks below the left wing.
The last APR for an 1861 double eagle in MS61 is $7,475 for a PCGS coin that was sold by Heritage in their April 2012 auction.
A great type example for the collector who likes Civil War issues.
