CHOICE EF 1860-S DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1860-S is similar in overall rarity to the Civil War issues from this mint except its population hasn’t been jolted by shipwreck findings. It is mostly seen in EF and low-to-mid AU grades but not often with natural color and choice surfaces.

To my eyes, this coin looks like a “lock” AU50 or even slightly better as it is choice and lustrous. The color, a blend of medium green-gold and rose, appears to be totally natural and it is pleasing in appearance.

The last CAC approved EF45 example of this date to sell at auction brought $2,820 as Heritage 1/14: 7069. That coin was graded by PCGS.
