The 1860-S double eagle is an issue that is comparable in rarity to the 1859-S and 1861-S. All three dates are seen most often in the EF40 to AU53 range. They become scarce in the higher AU grades and are quite rare in Uncirculated.
This is a dark, dirty example with rich orange-gold surfaces that are contrasted by dirt on the highlights. There is underlying luster and fewer marks than usual for the issue. As always, the hair detail on Liberty is not seperated and distinct.
The last NGC AU53 to sell at auction was Heritage 10/12: 6177 which brought $3,408.
