CONDITIONALLY RARE MS62+ 1860 DOBLE EAGLE

The 1860 double eagle is common in all circulated grades and can be found in the lowest Uncirculated grades with just a small effort. It becomes rare in properly graded MS62 and it is very rare in MS63 and above with probably no more than a half dozen in MS63 to MS64.

This fresh-to-the-market example has exceptional eye appeal due to its rich, natural glowing orange-gold color which is accented by some deeper hues on the devices from bag storage. The strike is sharp and the luster dances across the lightly abraded surfaces. There are just a few too many ticks on the obverse to grade this coin a full MS63 but it is clearly much finer than the “typical” MS62.

Bonham’s 9/15: 237 ($11,466) was graded MS62 by NGC and it didn’t sport a CAC sticker. No MS62+ appears to have sold at auction and the last MS63 was a PCGS coin sold all the way back in February 2005.

If you collect Type One double eagles by date or if you are looking for an interesting Type One type coin with character and condition rarity, than this 1860 is the coin for you

CAC has approved three in MS62 with two finer.
