While far more available than the 1855-1859 date run, the 1860-P is a moderately scarce issue in the higher AU grades and a scarce one in full Mint State. It sells for a reasonably modest premium over the 1861-P in AU58 but it is many, many times harder to find.
This original example has soft, satiny luster below natural orange-gold hues. There is some friction on the obverse while the reverse is choice. If a split grade were used to describe this coin, I would call it “58/62″ and the reverse is really quite choice. A small solitary bagmark on the jawline can be seen on the obverse.
A good value in this grade, as are all Type One double eagles in AU58, given the large price jump to MS60/61.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with three finer.
