While not as scarce as the 1856-P, the 1858 double eagle is a scarce, undervalued issue in its own right. It is often lumped with gthe 1858 but it is, in fact, a considerably scarcer issue. It becomes very hard to find above AU55 and it is quite scarce–if not actually rare–in Uncirculated.
This bright, frosty example shows pale green-gold and rose colors on either side. There is little evidence of actual wear but there is enough bag friction in the fields and rub on the high spots that its assigned grade of AU58 is, in my opinion, accurate.
There have been just two AU58 1858 double eagles that have sold at auction in 2012. Heritage 1/12: 6647 (graded by NGC) brought $4,313 while Heritage 2/12: 5021 (graded by PCGS) brought $4,744.
This is a good-looking example of a date that is just not often seen above AU55.
