The 1845-O is a median rarity among No Motto half eagles from this mint. It is most comparable to the 1851-O and, as with other New Orleans issues of this denomination, the 1845-O is undervalued when compared to Charlotte and Dahlonega half eagles of this era. The 1845-O is seen most often in EF40 to AU50 grades and it is very scarce in AU55.
This very well struck example shows limited abrasions and is characterized by splashes of rich orange-gold color on the obverse and, less so, on the reverse. Both sides show scattered abrasions consistent with the assigned grade.
There have been no PCGS graded AU55 examples sold at auction since Teletrade offered an example all the way back in September 2001. Four NGC AU55s have sold at auction since 2009.
CAC has approved three in this grade with nine finer.
