CAC APPROVED CHOICE AU 1844-O HALF EAGLE
The 1844-O is the most available No Motto New Orleans half eagle. It is the only date of this type which can be obtained in the higher AU grades at a still-reasonable price and the fact that it tends to be well-made makes it ideal for type purposes.
This very choice example shows completely natural deep russet and green-gold colors on both sides. There is considerable underlying luster and the details are fully rendered with no signs of die lapping on the stars. An AU58 grade would not be out of line for this coin but there are a few small ticks in the right obverse field.
No CAC approved AU55 or 55+ 1844-O half eagle has sold at auction. A nice NGC AU55 brought $1,500 as Heritage 4/14: 10928.
This is the only 1844-O half eagle graded AU55+ from either service and it would make an excellent type coin for the picky collector on a budget.
CAC has approved seven in AU55 with 23 finer.
