The 1844-D is one of the more available half eagles from this mint but, as with nearly all Dahlonega issues, it is rare in Uncirculated. There are probably no more than a dozen or so known in Uncirculated with nearly all in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This piece shows splendid deep natural color with rich honey-gold hues splashes across the obverse; the reverse is lighter in color and not as extensively toned. As is typical for this issue, the luster is frosty in texture and the strike is excellent. There are some minor scuffs in the left obverse field and a few others in the reverse field below STATES OF. The overall eye appeal is excellent and the color is deeper and richer than on all but a handful of 1844-D half eagles which I can recall having seen.

The last MS61 example of this date to sell at auction was an NGC coin from the S.S. New Yorkshipwreck which sold for $12,650 back in July 2008.

This would be a perfect type coin for the collector looking for a single choice, higher grade half eagle from this mint.

CAC has approved one in this grade with two finer.
