The 1843 is one of the more available No Motto half eagles from the 1840′s. It is seen from time to time in MS60 to MS61 but it is scarce in properly graded MS62 and rare above this.

This is one of the prettier Philadelphia No Motto half eagles that I have seen in some time, regardless of date. This example is totally original with very attractive deep orange-gold and greenish color with splashes of rich reddish-gold on the reverse. Other than a tiny shallow planchet flake (mint-made) at the chin of Liberty, the surfaces are very choice and the reverse, on its own is exceptional.

Heritage 4/13: 5764, an NGC MS62 with CAC approval, sold for $4,406. It was a nice coin but it didn’t have the superb coloration that this example shows.

Philadelphia No Motto half eagles from the 1840′s are hugely undervalued in my opinion.

CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer (two in MS63 and one in MS64).
