This is the second rarest half eagle from this mint after the 1847-O. There are probably no more than five to six dozen known with most in the VF-EF grade range.

This example shows light to medium olive-gold color with some splashes of sunflower-gold. It has the details and body of an EF45 but it has been appropriately net graded by PCGS due to the presence of a diagonal gash on the cheek of Liberty and a few light, shallow marks on her neck. The reverse is lightly struck on the neck feathers as always seen.

There have been just two PCGS EF40′s sold at auction since March 2005 and a total of six slabbed EF40 examples in total since early 1995.

I regard the 1842-O half eagle as one of the rarest and most undervalued gold coins ever produced at the New Orleans mint.
