Variety 7-E.
Two varieties of 1842-D half eagle exist: the Small Date and its rarer counterpart the Large Date. The Small Date is an underappreciated issue whose scarcity is belied by inflated population figures at both PCGS and NGC. Nice Extremely Fine coins are hard to find an in demand.
This attractive example shows medium russet color with slightly deeper hues seen on the obverse than on the reverse. The obverse is well detailed and choice while the reverse shows some minor scuffs and is not fully defined at the center.
The last PCGS EF45 1842-D Small Date half eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $2,900 as DLRC 6/13: 374.
Nice quality for less than $3,000.
CAC has approved 8 in this grade with 10 finer.
