Small Date variety. This is the more available of the two varieties of half eagle struck at the Dahlonega mint in 1842. It is reasonably easy to locate in the EF40-AU50 grade range but it becomes scarce in the mid-range of the About Uncirculated grades.
This example is a late die state struck from lapped die with resultant weakness on the obverse stars. The central details are sharp and the color is a pleasing, even deep green-gold with a thin band of contrasting reddish color at the peripheries. The surfaces show some old ticks which are mostly concealed by the depth of the coloration.
A perfect piece for the collector working on an affordable EF-AU set of Dahlonega half eagles.
