Variety 7-E. Small Date, as designated by NGC.

The 1842-D Small Date is the more available of the two varieties of half eagle made at the Dahlonega mint during this year. It is a relatively available issue in EF but most have been dipped and/or processed and it is quite difficult to locate a piece with natural color and choice surfaces.

This pleasing russet-gold example has color which deepens to a rich reddish-gold at the borders; more so on the reverse. The wear is even and their is nice balance seen between the two sides; the surfaces show scattered marks consistent with the assigned grade. This is a very pleasing coin for the grade.

No CAC approved EF40 1842-D Small Date half eagles have ever appeared for sale at auction. Average quality non-CAC pieces in tis grade typically sell in the $1,900-2,200 range.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 12 finer.
