Variety 1, Die State II with rim crumbing on the reverse over ST in STATES.
While overshadowed by its Small Date counterpart, the 1842-C Large Date half eagle is a tough coin in its own right. It is sometimes available in AU55 but most of the coins in these holders are scuffy and not choice. Properly graded, choice pieces are very scarce.
This choice, orange-gold example has never before been offered for sale and it is especially nice for the grade. It has never been cleaned or brightened and the softly lustrous surfaces show fewer marks than normal.
No CAC approved PCGS AU55 has ever sold at auction and only one example graded AU55 has sold since January 2008; slabbed by PCGS this coin realized $4,313 as Heritage 1/11: 6875.
A really nice 1842-C Large Date half eagle which should fit into just about any set of Charlotte half eagles.
CAC has approved this one coin in all AU grades combined with only two finer (MS61 and MS62).
