RARE UNCIRCULATED 1841-D HALF EAGLE
Small D mintmark, designated by PCGS. Variety 5-D, die state I.
The 1841-D is the most available early date half eagle from this mint. There are an estimated dozen (or possibly a few more) in Uncirculated including a few really choice pieces in the MS63 to MS64 range. But it is not often available for sale and it is popular with type collectors who want an interesting date to represent this type in their sets.
The obverse is quite choice and it shows unusual slightly reflective fields which are clean and have nice light green-gold color. The reverse is a bit less choice with a few wispy hairlines (not from cleaning) including a thin but visible one from the right wig tip through the beak and into the field beyond the F in OF. The strike is exceptional with all the detail one would expect to see on a Philadelphia half eagle of this era. The overall eye appeal is really good for the date and grade.
Only two PCGS MS61 examples of this date have been auctioned since 1999 and the most recent of these, ex Goldberg 2/06: 1087, brought $10,925.
This date is seldom available in this grade (and in a PCGS holder) so the advanced date collector is urged to give it careful consideration.
Ex Goldberg 2/07: 2276 (as NGC MS61) where it realized $12,650.
