Narrow Mill variety; not designated on the holder by PCGS.

The 1840 is numismatically significant as the first year in which the modified Liberty Head design was employed on the half eagle. It is a very common issue in circulated grades and only marginally scarce in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it is rare in properly graded MS62 and very rare above this.

This is the second very nice example of this date I have owned in recent weeks, having just sold a nice PCGS/CAC MS63. This coin is nearly as choice and it is characterized by lovely deep, rich green-gold hues atop lightly marked, lustrous surfaces. The obverse shows a few lights ticks under magnification; the reverse has a tiny mint-made lamination below ED in UNITED and an interesting die crack through the A in STATES to the tip of the shield.

As this is the only 1840 half eagle graded MS62+ by PCGS, there are no auction comparables.

CAC has approved three in MS62 (including this one in 62+) and one finer.
