Varieties of 1840-P half eagles are known with a Broad Mill (scarce) or a Narrow Mill (common). The term “mill” refers to the diameter of the border and can be plainly seen even inside the holder. The 1840 Narrow Mill is a reasonably available date in AU55 to AU58 but most have been dipped and lack original color.
This choice, high-end example shows very little wear and both sides are even green-gold in hue. A considerable amount of luster rests on both sides as well. There is an interesting die crack on the reverse which runs from the rim at 4:00 through the arrow heads into the shield.
The last PCGS AU55 CAC example to sell at action brought $1,495 as Stacks Bowers 5/12: 4276 and it was not nearly as choice as this piece, in my opinion.
CAC has approved six in this grade with 13 finer.
