Old Green Holder. By today’s standards this coin grades at least AU50 to AU53 but it does show a light old brushing on the obverse.
The 1840-C is numismatically significant as the first half eagle from this mint to show the new modified Liberty head and to have the mintmark on the reverse. It is a scarcer date in all grades.
This piece is very lustrous and toned in a warm orange-gold shade. It has been wiped at one time but it shows the detail and luster of an AU coin. The eye appeal is excellent.
The only PCGS EF40 example to sell at auction since early 2006 is ex Goldberg 2/12: 1489 at $2,645.
A neat coin for the collector who prefers older holders.
