The 1839 half eagle is doubly significant as a first year of issue and as a one-year type. It is common in EF40-AU53 grades but hard to find in AU55 and scarce in properly graded AU58.
This is an uncommonly choice example for the grade with lovely rich natural reddish-orange and medium green-gold colors, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and the reverse. There is a good deal of soft, satiny luster below these hues and the surfaces are free of significant marks.
Three NGC AU58 1839 half eagles were sold at auction in 2012 with prices ranging from a low of $2,185 to a high of $2,415. However, none had CAC approval or were nearly as choice as the current example.
All 1839-dated gold is becoming popular as collectors become aware of its numismatic importance but nice Philadelphia half eagles from this year remain undervalued.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with two finer.
