CHOICE COLLECTOR GRADE 1838-D HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1838-D is numismatically significant as a first-year-of-issue and a one-year type. It is relatively plentiful with a few hundred known overall but it has never been easy to locate nice affordable examples in the collector grades of Very Fine and Extremely Fine.
This is one of the few VF 1838-D half eagles I have seen that I would be proud to put into my own collection. It is well detailed and lightly abraded with pleasing russet color which deepens towards the borders. While this coin was well-used, it was also well-preserved and has far more eye appeal than one would expect from a VF35 1838-D half eagle.
Only two PCGS VF35 1838-D half eagles have sold at auction since early 2007. The last brought $5,875 as Heritage 8/13: 5066.
This is the only CAC approved VF35 1838-D half eagle and I expect it to be one of the more popular coins in this offering.
CAC has approved one in this grade with 14 finer.
