The 1838-D is one of the most popular Dahlonega half eagles due to its status as a first-year-of-issue and a one-year type coin. It is more available in AU50 to AU55 grades than its counterpart the 1838-C but it is more affordable (not to mention more in demand). Most of the AU53′s that I see are bright, baggy and lacking in beauty.

This is a solid coin for the grade with enough luster to give it some consideration at the AU55 level. It is well struck with clear details seen on both sides and nice medium green-gold color. The surfaces are much less marked than usual with just a small abrasion noted between stars one and two and a vertical mark below the eagle’s right wing.

The last PCGS AU53 to sell at public auction was ex Heritage 10/12: 5852, which realized $14,100. No others have sold since then.

There are many Dahlonega half eagles that are rarer than the 1838-D but none, with the exception of the 1861-D, have the multiple level of demand which the 1838-D possesses. This mid-range AU should make a great addition to a specialist’s set.
