The 1838-C is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for Charlotte half eagle. It is also a one-year type which employs the Classic Head design and features the mintmark on the obverse. It is seen most often in VF-EF grades and it is extremely hard to find with good eye appeal.

This medium yellow-gold example has typical surfaces for the issue with a number of small old marks seen in the fields on both sides. As is common, the obverse is better detailed than the reverse and this is understandable given the massive bisecting crack on the reverse.

There have been four EF40 examples of the 1838-C half eagle sold at auction since the end of 2011. The last two, both graded by PCGS and both choicer than the current piece, brought $10,575 and $11,500.

This is the single most in-demand half eagle from this mint and it certainly is the only half eagle from Charlotte with broad across-the-board collector support.
