Classic Head, Plain 4.
The short-lived Classic Head half eagle design was issued from 1834 through 1838. The 1834 Plain 4 is by far the most available issue which makes it perfect for type purposes. It is common in all circulated grades but choice, original AU58 pieces are not easy to find, especially with great color.
This lovely example is notable for its rich coppery red and intense orange-gold hues which are seen, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and the reverse. Both sides show light wear only and have clean surfaces with no appreciable marks.
The last NGC AU58 example of this date with CAC approval to sell at auction was ex Heritage 8/13: 5060 which brought $2,233. This coin was pleasing but lacked the excellent color seen on the current specimen.
CAC has approved 30 in this grade with 23 finer.
