The 1834 Plain 4 is by far the most available Classic Head half eagle. It is easy to locate in the higher AU grades but it is likely that less than 10% of the slabbed AU55 and AU58 coins are choice enough to receive approval from CAC.
This medium green-gold example show deeper contrasting reddish-gold hues at the borders. There is very little in the way of actual wear and the underlying surfaces are slightly reflective as on many examples of this date.
No CAC approved AU58′s have sold at auction in recent memory. Non-CAC NGC 58′s typically sell in the $1,700-1,900 range.
CAC has approved 35 in this grade with 27 finer.
