The 1813 is far and away the most available date in the desirable Capped Head Left Large Diameter type, struck from 1813 through 1829. This type contains a number of Classic Rarities and the 1813 is always in demand as a reasonably affordable example of this type. If viewed strictly by the populations figures, one might think AU58′s aren’t scarce. This is not the case; at least not with properly grade pieces with choice surfaces and natural color.

This is a gem slider which looks like an MS62/63 coin to the naked eye. There is no real wear and nearly full luster but a small bit of rub on the high spots is barely noted when the coin is tilted. The surfaces are very clean and the color is a pleasing medium yellow-gold with some splashes of red along the reverse device and lettering. The strike is much sharper than usual with nearly full borders. The eye appeal is exceptional for the grade and I have seen many examples graded MS62 with a fraction of this coin’s eye appeal.

No PCGS AU58 1813 half eagle has sold at auction since Stacks 3/10 (not approved by CAC) realized $10,350. A low end NGC AU58 sold for $10,261 as Heritage 4/13: 5739 and it was also not approved by CAC.

If you’ve been waiting for the “right” 1813 half eagle and you don’t have a budget which will allow for an all-there Uncirculated coin, give this piece some thought as it is as nice an AU58 as you are likely to find.
